Worldwide words and paintings
A unique art show is coming to Arts Habitat One and it will be one of the last such events at the creative live-work space before it shuts its doors later this year.The visual and written project is called Painting a Book of Edmonton, a multicultural art project that puts words and pictures together, courtesy of a group of local artists all with international origins. The show is being put on by the Multicultural Artists’ Group in co-operation with The Writers Beyond Borders writers’ group and the Borderlines Circles program.
Having come from different countries and cultural backgrounds, the creative people of these groups met in Edmonton, and despite their diverse origins, have found a common passion for artistic creation.
Nataliya Bukhanova, founder of the Multicultural Artists’ Group, explained that attendees could expect an interesting range of work.
“It is a really big project! The idea is not just to show original art but combine it with words of multicultural writers … 12 writers who are taking part in the show. We have about 10 or 12 visual artists. I don’t know if we’ll have enough space!” she laughed.
The list of contributors includes writers Andres Torres Scott, Athiaan Garang, Ella Zeltserman, Jocelyne Verret, Juli Anne McEvers-Gareau, Maitham Salman, Melissa Morelli Lacroix, Monika Igali, Olga Rojas, Sara Borquez, Savithri Machiraju, Therezinha Franca Kennedy, Thuc Cong and Yukari Meldrum.
Joining them are Bukhanova and other visual artists including Edith Rongen, Lorien Maheu, Lynn Daviduk, Maitham Salman, Maria Riedyk, Noemi LoPinto and Ruta Michol.
Painting a Book of Edmonton starts on Friday with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Artists will be in attendance. The show runs until Friday, Feb. 21.
